Biography

Dr. Alexander E. Berezin has received PhD in 1994 in the State Medical University of Zaporozhye (Ukraine). He is currently working as a Professor of Medicine in the State Medical University of Zaporozhye (Ukraine). As a Chief of Cardiology Unit of Internal Medicine Department, his research goals are fundamental study of biological markers, the implementation of visualization procedures and percutaneous cardiovascular interventions, the development of cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation, especially in the field affected heart failure and coronary artery disease, as well as regenerative medicine. Based on this research and training in heart failure he has received several awards and honors, such as: Award of The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (2002), Honor of The Ukrainian Cardiology Association (2004), and is serving one of the active members of the European Cardiology Society. He has authored more 550 research articles, 12 books/chapters. He is a fellow of the Ukrainian Cardiology Association; Member of the Ukrainian Heart Failure Association; Member of Heart Failure Association of the ESC; Member of European Acute Cardiovascular Care Association; Member of W.G. on Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology of the ESC; Member of European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions; Member of European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, Member of W.G. on Hypertension & the Heart of the ESC. He is current Editor-in-Chief of Biological Markers and Guided Therapy. After obtaining PhD in Biotechnology from India, I moved to USA for my postdoctoral training. I have had extensive training for 5 years at NIDDK / NIH, USA in molecular genetics of Human complex diseases with major emphasis on type 2 diabetes and a specific training in genetic mutation identification, genotyping and their association analysis with type 2 diabetes. Subsequently, I was recruited as a faculty in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Research Interests

Research Interest: Currently, my research area focuses on the identification of better diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for type 2 diabetes and its complications especially Diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Despite significant advances in metabolic and high blood pressure control, the prevalence and incidence rate of diabetes and DKD is increasing worldwide. Given the overwhelming burden of diabetes and its complication, it is of particular importance to understand the development and progression of diabetes and DKD and to identify new therapeutic approaches which alone or in combination with standard therapy have the potential to prevent or delay its progression thereby improving patient survival. With advances in omics-driven technologies that allow high-throughput measurements of omics-related traits in combination with more sophisticated bioinformatic and statistical methods, we envision for identification of novel diagnostic and prognostic markers for the early diagnosis, prevention and better treatment for diabetes and DKD.

I graduated with highest honors as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2002 and obtained a PhD in developmental neuroanatomy in 2007, both at University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland. Since January 2008 I was working as a postdoctoral researcher on neurodegenerative and regenerative mechanisms of neurological diseases first at Columbia University and later at New York University Medical Centers where I lead a long term project investigating the role of the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-Products (RAGE) and its most prominent ligands in pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, mainly sensorimotor diabetic neuropathy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Currently I am an adjunct instructor at New York University Medical Center, responsible for training other laboratory members in microscopy techniques, image capturing and signal quantification.

Research Interests

My research interests include the comprehension of common molecular mechanisms underlying neurological disorders, particularly neurodegenerative diseases (i.e.: diabetic neuropathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and dementia (i.e: Alzheimer�s), indentifying and tracing early biological and neurocognitive markers of these diseases and developing treatments leading to their subsequent remission. While it is has been a common knowledge that different neurological diseases reveal diverse, disease specific pathological features upon histological examination at their late stage, it is becoming clear that, during the course of the disease, different neurodegenerative diseases may display similar histopathological characteristics and clinical symptoms thus raising the question whether there might be one common molecular pathway, �a missing link�, a conservative set of proteins, (a neurodegenerative, evolutionary conserved core of proteins) identical or at least similar for various neurodegenerative disorders at their early stage. Identifying the core would help us better understand, diagnose and prevent or slow the progress of the neurodegenerative disorder.

Dr. Dahl has co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts and is an inventor on over 20 patents in therapeutics and chemistry. In his spare time, Dr. Dahl is an ardent admirer of Wrightian architecture, both pre- and post-Prairie School, having himself incorporated Usonian design philosophies in his private residence. Dr. Dongwei Zhang is an associate professor in the Diabetes Research Center at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM). He obtained his PhD & MD degree in biochemistry from BUCM in 2004. After that, he worked as a post doctor in the department of chemistry at Tsinghua University, China. In 2006, he joined Prof. Dieter Bromme’s lab at the University of British Columbia. His study was mostly focused on cathepsins and diseases. In 2012, he was recruited as an associate professor at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. T. Narender was born in a remote village, Vilasagar, which is located in the Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh State, India. He obtained the Ph.D. degree in the area of natural products (phytochemistry) from the University of Kakatiya, Warangal, A.P., India in 1999. During his doctoral studies, he received fellowship (1994-1999) from the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, India. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree, he joined as a Scientist in the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) Cochin, which is one of the constituents of ICAR, New Delhi, India in November 1999, and continued there until July 2002, where he worked on the bioactive substances from the marine organisms. In July 2002, he moved to the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, India, on a higher position, and July 2011 onwards he holds a Principal Scientist position. At the CDRI, he is involved in the drug discovery program from the Indian medicinal plants, marine organisms. He has been awarded the BOYSCAST Fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, India, in 2007. As a part of this program he visited University of California, San Diego (UCSD), USA, where he worked in Prof. William Fenical’s lab on marine microorganisms from April 2007 to March 2008. He published 80 research articles in various international journals. He has been honored with the CDRI Incentive Award for the best publication during the year 2008 and 2012. Currently, his research group is engaged in development of novel drugs/leads for various diseases such as malaria, leishmania, cancer, diabetes, and lipid lowering from the Indian medicinal plants, marine organisms. He also carries out work on chemical transformation and synthesis of natural products of biological importance.

Her PhD work was on the role of profilin, a cytoskeletal protein, in breast cancer under the supervision of Professor Surya S. Singh. She did her postdoctoral work in the labs of Dr. Chellappan, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL and Dr. Rosser, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Orlando, FL.  She is currently an independent scientist in the Department of Biochemistry, Osmania University. Her research interests involve understanding the underlying mechanisms in the progression and metastasis of cervical cancer due to cigarette smoking. Having identified increased profilin levels in human breast cancer tissues in the Indian population, her studies also focus on the role of profilin phosphorylation in the progression and metastasis of breast cancer and its potential as a chemotherapeutic target.

Agbor graduated with an MD (with Honours) degree from the Faculty of Medicine, The 

University of Yaounde 1, Cameroon. An initial three-year residency career saw him 

practicing and gaining further postgraduate medical training in various district 

hospitals and university teaching hospitals in Cameroon. However, soon after joining 

Professor Jean-Claude Mbanya’s (immediate past president of the IDF) HoPiT research 

team in Yaounde, he quickly developed an interest in academic medicine. This 

interest saw him leave Cameroon to join Professor Andrew Boulton’s (Current 

president EASD) diabetes research team in Manchester UK in the Spring of 2006. Since 

then, he has been employed by the University of Manchester as a senior Clinical 

Research Fellow within the Institute of Medical and Human Sciences, a post he 

occupies till present date. He also holds substantive clinical contracts as a 

Diabetologist/Endocrinologist within the Division of Unscheduled Care at the 

Warrington and Halton NHS Foundation 

Since graduation, Agbor has authored and co-authored several publications in various 

medical and scientific journals. He has also co-authored over half a dozen textbook 

chapters including: “Oxford Handbook of key Clinical Evidence (OHKCE)”, “US Board 

Educational Review Manual in Diabetes and Endocrinology”, and in “High Risk Diabetic 

Foot: Treatment and Prevention”. He regularly undertakes peer reviews for several 

journals

Agbors work has earned him prestigious international awards. Some of the notable 

ones include the “Clinical Science Award” of the British Society for Cardiovascular, 

the Mark Lavin Award of the American Diabetes Association, and the Chairmen’s Award 

at the Malvern Diabetic Foot Conference and the very prestigious EASD Rising Star 

Award in 2011

I am a graduate of B. J. Medical College, one of the top ten medical schools in India. I did my internship at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, a 2800 bed hospital and one of the largest community hospitals in Asia. Before starting Internal Medicine residency training, I rotated at Massachusetts General Hospital, Tufts University, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and Brown University. After those rotations, I spent a year in learning epidemiology and research statistics at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA.  I also volunteered as a Research Assistant at Brown University for one year and at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for six months in Department of Cardiology. Currently, I am a 3rd year Internal Medicine resident at Staten Island University Hospital.

My interest in the field of clinical research lies in Quality Improvement projects. My research project on ‘Gender and Health Insurance Disparity in ICD utilization’ was selected for Fellow with Highest Scoring Abstract Award at Heart Rhythm Society. Another project on ‘Impact of Annual Operator Volume on Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Outcomes in High Risk Subgroups’ was selected for best of the best abstract at Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention Scientific Sessions 2014. I was also awarded by Eric N. Prystowsky Clinical Research Award for my research project on ‘In-hospital complications associated with catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation in the United States between 2000 and 2010: analysis of 93 801 procedures’.

I am also proficient in different methods of statistical analysis - Multivariate Logistic and Cox-regression analysis, Global measure of model fit, Discrimination, Calibration, Reclassification, and Markov modeling for cost effective analysis. In my free time, I guide medical students for their USMLE preparations and teach them statistical analysis for clinical research.

Even though my family conditions are not favourable to continue my education, my parents recognized my talent in studies and encouraged me to continue higher studies.My aim is to become a Scientist. With the continuous support from my parents I finished my Masters in Medical Biochemistry from Katuri Medical College, Guntur, Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, India. in May 2009. Later I worked as a Lecturer in Biochemistry at Konaseema Institute of Medical Sciences, Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, India till March 2011. In the same month I got an opportunity to work as Lecturer in Biochemistry at SSR Medical College, Bell reive, Mauritius. I have worked for one and half year in Mauritius.After returning from Mauritius, In thirst to increase my research knowledge I had appeared for Phd entrance exam at Dr NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh . I successfully cleared all the PhD screening exams conducted and joined as PhD scholar at Narayana Medical College and Hospital in August 2012. I am expecting to finish my PhD project by August 2015.

Now I am offering my service as Lecturer and Researcher at Narayana Medical College and Hospital, Nellore and Andhra Pradesh.Till date I had publish 12 papers in different international and peer reviewed journals which includes research and review articles. Dr. Devindra Sehra MD, DTCD is a clinician, Internist and a diabetologist. A post graduate from Maulana Azad Medical College, with added qualification of a post graduate diploma in chest and tuberculosis from reputed Patel Chest Institute in Delhi. He started his academic career from Maharaja Aggarsen Hospital, a multispecialty institution in 1990 as a consultant. In 1996 he took charge as a Senior Consultant. He is currently involved in Outpatient care, Inpatient Care, Teaching, Clinical Rounds and research work at the hospital. He is interested in the clinical aspects of Diabetes. Association of hypertension in diabetes with metabolic syndrome fascinated him and his review of literature on the aspect that Sulfonylureas may be the etiological factors for Hypertension in T2DM has been accepted internationally. His special interest is whether the clinical manifestations of diabetes are those of disease process per se or due to anti-hyperglycemic prescribed as treatment.

Dileep Kumar graduated with highest honors in Basic science in 2006 from University of Allahabad, India and obtained a Post graduate degree in Medical Microbiology in 2008 from Bundelkhand University Jhansi, India. I am currently pursuing D. Phil. / Research Project in oxidative medicine using natural product, during aging condition since 2009 in Biochemistry, University of Allahabad, India. 
I was selected three times for Best poster presentation on HIV, anti-oxidative stress, Natural Product Research in 2008, 2011 and 2013 respectively; winning few quiz competitions and awards in the process. I was availed myself in cutting edge research work at Department of Biochemistry, University of Allahabad for three years during research, where I got expertise in Erythrocyte oxidative stress, diabetes, toxicity testing, aging studies, pharmacokinetics, with equal inclination to ethnopharmacology. My areas of interest include diabetes, oxidative stress, erythrocyte modulation, toxicology, chemical biology, ethnopharmacology and so on. I have published many research articles in highly reputed national and international journals and few more in the pipeline. 
Presently I am working on exploring the natural products for treating and managing type-2 diabetes during oxidative stress condition.

Dr Mohamed interests include the study of diabetes epidemiology  ,diabetic foot ,and complementary and alternative medicine .He has special interest in the use of Natural honey in the management of a variety of wounds including acute and chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers ,varicose vein ulcers ,traumatic wounds, burns, cancer related wounds and contact dermatitis

Dr Mohamed has presented scientific papers both locally and internationally and has been awarded the best paper presentation at the First International conference of Family Medicine in Sultanate Of Oman ,Jan ,2009.
Dr Mohamed has Co-authored an educational toolkit named" Diabetes" specifically written for diabetic patients written in both Arabic and English languages and has written a chapter in a scientific book named "Cellular and biological mechanism of honey wound healing"

Hiroaki Satoh, M.D., Ph.D. is Associate Professor of the Department of Nephrology, Hypertension, Diabetology, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Fukushima Medical University.  Dr. Satoh received his M.D. from Akita University and his Ph.D. from University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine.  Before coming to Fukushima Medical university, he was a resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Tokyo hospital, a graduate student at University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine, a research fellow in Jerrold M Olefsky's lab at University of California, San Diego.  Dr. Satoh has been on the Fukushima Medical University faculty since 2004.  His research focuses is to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of insulin resistance.

Prof. Hongcai Shang is in charge of the research and development of traditional Chinese medicine as the vice director and a professor of the academy of TCM of Tianjin university of traditional Chinese medicine. He has become the fellow of Cochrane Collaboration “Patient Reported Outcome Method Group” since May 2008 and the secretary of CONSORT for TCM and CONSORT-STRICTA . 
Dr Shang has long been engaged in the clinical practice and experimental research of TCM. He has successively hosted and participated in more than 10 projects of national level and established the new clinical research assessment method. He has hosted a large scale and multi-centre randomized controlled trial named as “Qishen Yiqi Dropping pills for the secondary prevention of myocardial infarction “since 2004. He has also hosted 2 projects from National Nature Science Foundation of China (NSFC).   
Dr Shang won separately the prize of the National Development of Science and Technology in 2004,2011,2013 and was rewarded the nomination honor of the “National top 100 Excellent Doctoral Papers” in 2007. He has published more than 120 papers and taught more than 10 masters during decade. He is a peer-reviewer of some international journals like the Lancet and Contemporary Clinical Trials.

Natasha have submitted her Ph.D in Biochemistry from Central Drug  research Institute, Lucknow (INDIA), a CSIR lab, on a project entitled “ Nutritional modification induced insulin resistance a: Tissue specific role of Inflammation and Oxidative stress”. My academic excellence right from my childhood through high school and graduation has always been my strongest asset and has defined me more so than anything else. My passion for science led me to take my under graduation in Biochemistry, Botany and Chemistry as major subjects. After getting strong footage in these three subjects, I decided to go for a Masters in Biochemistry as I believe that knowledge at biochemical level will pave the right way for implementing my knowledge of chemistry involved in Biology.
After my masters I  chose to undertake a research project at Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, India during the period September 2008 to March 2010. The aim of the project was to identify the various drug targets for the treatment of type II Diabetes and identified many natural and synthetic molecules having the potential to be considered as a potent drug for the treatment of Type II Diabetes. We patented some molecules as the potential drug for type II Diabetes. It was during this research project that my intersest in Diebetes research arose and chose to carry forward my Ph.D on the same subject.
During my research work I focused on the effect of various modulated diets ( westernized diets) in inducing insulin resistance in the key insulin sensitive tissues viz skeletal muscles and Adipose tissues. We emphasized on the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in inducing insulin resistance in these tissues when subjected to modulated dietary nutrients. We successfully established the in vitro/invivo models of insulin resistance in response to high fructose (carbohydrate) diet. We also studied the immunomodulatory effect of these nutritional modifications  in the Invivo system in the above mentioned tissues. 
Based on my previous experience and my current scientific interest in Diabetes, I want to carry forward my career in the same field and wants to explore this disease further at its biochemical and molecular level as it has become one of the major concerns for the society.

He has been specialised in diabetes and its complications in the Diabetes Centre and the Diabetic Foot Clinic at King’s College Hospital, London, UK, as well as in the German Diabetes Centre at the Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany. He has established an ongoing collaboration with the neuropathy study group of the latter. He has published more than 190 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has also participated with numerous presentations in Greek and European medical congresses and served as invited reviewer in medical journals (more than 400 articles). planning. My focus in planning and design is on behavioural aspects of 

the humans and health implications in built environments. I am

Allahabad University, Allahabad.
The physiological and psychological responses of human to built 

environment, manifests metabolic syndrome and incidence of obesity and 

diabetes mellitus. Built environments where humans spend more than 90% 

of lifetime are evolved through myriad of socio-politico-economic and 

cultural factors specific to a geographical region. With cities 

growing to unprecedented sizes accompanied by modernization offering 

pseudo-comforts of higher fat diets, decreased physical activity, 

sedentary life style habits, increased physical and psychological 

distress affect large populations with pandemic obesity (predecessor 

of diabetes mellitus) and diabetes itself. 
Hippocrates rationally examined the nature of adverse health effects 

in relation to work and living spaces. In his treatise, “On Air, Water 

and Places”, he proposed that disease is a direct manifestation of an 

unhealthy site. The quality of air, water, food and general living 

conditions, along with the climatic elements of wind, sun and rain 

contribute to the wellbeing of persons. Givoni in “Man, Climate and 

Architecture” elucidates on the maintenance of the thermal equilibrium 

between the human body and its environment as one of the primary 

requirements for health, wellbeing and comfort. The interaction of the 

human body with the environment is essential to maintain optimal 

thermoregulatory mechanism and homeostasis or maintaining the body’s 

status quo factors such as blood pressure, body temperature, and fluid 

and electrolyte balance and body weight.

Dr. Lesley Cottrell is a tenure-track Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the WVU School of Medicine. Her doctorate is in Developmental Psychology. Her training included an NIDA-funded doctoral project examining parental monitoring and adolescent risk behaviors including substance use and unprotected sexual risk. She is a Co-Principal Investigator for the WVU Prevention Research Center and the Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Pediatrics.Her current research interests examine parental influences on child and adolescent health risk decision making and behaviors. She is the Principal Investigator for the Marion County, WV location of the National Children's Study and a co-investigator on an AFRI-funded grant examining the impact of obesity on preschool children. She is currently conducting a clinical translational project examining the association between asthma and obesity among WV children.

Dr. Chen is Fellow of American Heart Association (AHA) and member of American Physiology Society. Dr. Chen has served as a grant reviewer committee ofNIH, AHA and British Medical Research Council.During the past 12 years, Dr. Chen has been a part of a very successful research team that have been well-funded by NIH and AHA. He is the author of 40peer-reviewed publications and is currently funded by National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The long-term goals of his laboratory research are to understand the pathogenesis and identify the intracellular molecular basis that may contribute to abnormal angiogenesis and regeneration, exacerbation of cardiac dysfunction and heart failure, then, to develop novel therapies that can prevent or reverse these devastating diabetic cardiovascular diseases. Research Interests

The receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) angiopoietins/Tie-2 system, nutrient sensor Sirt3, prolyl hydroxylases-2 (PHD2), apelin/APJ and Notch signaling interactions in the regulation of vascular smooth muscle maturation, capillary growth and regression, cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. By using genetic modified Sirt3, Notch3 null, conditional knockout of PHD2 diabetic mice model, myocardial ischemia-induced angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro angiogenesis models, we will define: (1) the molecular mechanisms by which hyperglycemia or diabetes disrupt angiopoietins/Tie-2 system and cause vessel immaturation and regression; Sirt3 interactive effects with PHD2/HIF-1a signaling and apelin/APJ on myocardial neovessel maturation and angiogenesis; The mechanisms by which hyperglycemia interferes with pro-inflammatory programmed of endothelial cell with a focus on the role of elevated Ang-2; Whether disruption of Sirt3/Notch3 contributes to diabetes-induced abnormal vascular smooth muscle maturation, vascular progenitor differentiation and facilitate adverse cardiac remodeling and heart failure in diabetes. Identify novel molecular basis as a potential therapeutic target in diabetic cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis will provide novel approaches to prevent and/or reverse diabetic myocardial ischemia disease

Dr. Emily Piven (Formerly Dr. Emily Piven Haltiwanger) worked at the University of Texas at El Paso in the Rehabilitation Sciences Department at the College of Health Sciences for 10 years. She received her Clinical Doctorate of Occupational Therapy from Creighton University in 2004, Master�s Degree of Health Education from the Medical College of Georgia, and baccalaureate degree in Occupational Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1974. She is currently active in the World Federation of Occupational Therapists task force for development of an international education course on Disaster Preparedness and Response to train disaster volunteers from the rehabilitation profession. Dr. Piven has published numerous research articles in psychosocial adaptation to diabetes and chronic illness. She serves as Associate Editor of Occupational Therapy International, and Associate Editor of TANG: International Journal of Genuine Traditional Medicine, and is on the editorial boards of the Open Journal of Depression, the Journal of Clinical Trials, and the open access Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice. In 2011, she was awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award by the El Paso Diabetes Association and Academic Educator of the Year Award by the Texas Occupational Therapy Association. As a clinician, Dr. Piven worked in 23 rehabilitation settings expanding occupational therapy positions in Maryland, Missouri, South Carolina and Georgia. She was also in private practice for 18 years. She has been a pioneer in her profession developing individual and group interventions for management of diabetes for adolescents and elders for prevention of tertiary complications of the disease. She has presented her research in diabetes for the last 12 years at regional, national and international occupational therapy and health education conferences.

My primary research interest is to understand the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. Using animal models of diabetic retinopathy, we are trying to identify biochemical and molecular abnormalitiesthat could lead to the development of retinal histopathology seen in diabetic patients. The research is mainly focused on oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage, inflammatory markers, epigenetic modifications, and apoptosis. We expect to elucidate important molecular targets for future pharmacological interventions.

Dr. Shelley White-Means is Professor of Health Economics in the 

Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health 

Science Center. She received her Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern 

University. Dr. White-Means has over thirty years of research emphasis 

in health disparities and access to care for ethnic minorities, women, 

the elderly, and other vulnerable populations. She  leads a community 

partnership, Consortium on Health Education, Economic Empowerment and 

Research (CHEER), funded as an exploratory center of excellence by 

NIMHD from 2009-2012.  CHEER uses the principles of community based 

participatory research to serve as a primary resource in the 

Mississippi Delta’s effort to eliminate health disparities and 

transform health outcomes, specifically focusing on diabetes, heart 

disease, breast cancer, and men’s health.  Dr. White-Means is a Past-

President of the National Economic Association, board member for the 

American Economic Association’s Committee on the Status of Women in 

the Economic Profession (2011-2014), and member of the Robert Wood 

Johnson Foundation, National Advisory Committee on the Future of 

Nursing Scholars Program.

Dr. Stephen Agboola is a Research Scientist at the Center for Connected Health, Partners Healthcare and Harvard Medical School. His background and experiences motivates him to proactively seek methods to promote wellness and disease prevention. He is also skilled in monitoring and evaluation of health programs. He trained at the University of Ilorin Medical School, Nigeria and received his MPH degree with concentration in Quantitative Methods from the Harvard School of Public Health. Currently, his work at the Center for Connected Health involves designing, managing and evaluating research projects.

Carolyn Robertson is the founder of Customized Diabetes Education a practice dedicated to the support, education and management of patients with or at risk of diabetes. In addition she is a consultant at the UCLA Gonda Diabetes Center, University of California Los Angeles as well as a contract Diabetes Educator for the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation at the Wassaja Memorial Health Center in Fort McDowell, Arizona. Currently, Ms. Robertson serves on the Advisory Group, Diabetes Voice, for the International Diabetes Foundation and is a consultant to the Turkish Diabetes Nursing Association. She has been on the Board of , since 2005. She was on the faculty of the National Diabetes Education Initiative for 10 years, until 2008. Ms. Robertson has served on the Board of Directors for several organizations, including the New York City chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International (1996-2002), the American Association of Insulin Pump Therapy (1988-1995), and the New York Downstate affiliate of the American Diabetes Association (1990-1993). She has published works on insulin therapy and the complications of diabetes, including invited articles, book chapters, abstracts, and Web-based commentary.

Dr. Saporito is Vice President of Research and heads all internal and external research programs at Melior Discovery. Dr. Saporito has spent the last 22 years in positions of increasing responsibility in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Saporito has scientific expertise in phenotypic drug discovery, translational medicine and systems biology and has gained expertise in identifying drug candidates and enabling their progress from early lead stage, preclinical mechanism and pharmacology studies through to development. Dr. Saporito started his drug discovery career as a scientist at Cephalon Inc. in the Departments of Neurobiology and Pharmacology. At Cephalon, Dr. Saporito was the lead pharmacologist in the discovery of CEP-1347, a neuroprotective kinase inhibitor that reached late-stage clinical trials for Parkinson's disease. While at Cephalon, Dr. Saporito worked on a number of research efforts and collaborated with Dr. Reaume on a number of projects involving molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration. From 2002 to 2004, Dr. Saporito was Group Leader in Biology at Locus Pharmaceuticals, a computational drug design company. In this role he led various preclinical programs targeting oncological, inflammatory and neurological therapeutic endpoints.. Dr. Saporito received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (currently The University of Sciences of Philadelphia) and continued his postdoctoral studies at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School under the direction of Dr. Richard Heikkila.

Dr. Devineni had worked on early and late development projects in several therapeutic areas (metabolism, anti-infectives, transdermal contraceptive patch, Immunology, urology, and gastrointestinal).

Research interests include working in the area of diabetes since it truly is a pandemic affecting millions of people. Due to the increasing prevalence of the disease, poor glycemic control, and adverse effects (such as hypoglycemia and weight gain) of the existing drugs, there is a need for the development of new pharmacologic agents that can be either used as a monotherapy or in combination with the existing medications. Dr. Devineni has worked on Invokana�, a selective sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration to improve glycemic control in adults with T2DM. Dr. Devineni has published in several peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research at a number of international and national conferences. Dr. Devineni is a graduate of the Andhra University, BS in Pharmacy and the University of Georgia, PhD in pharmaceutics.

Ivan Rychl�k e graduated in Internal Medicine in 1994 and in Nephrology in 1996. In 1998-1999 he passed one-year Fellowship Award of ISN in Heidelberg, tutor Professor E. Ritz. In 2001 he defended his Ph.D. (Charles University, Prague). Since 1995 he is active in pre- and postgraduation teaching, he habilitated as Associate Professor in 2004 and Full Professor of Medicine in 2011 (Charles University, Prague). He is an active member of several Societies: Czech Society of Nephrology (CSN), ERA-EDTA, ISN, ASN, EUVAS, ECNA (European CardioNephrology Assoc., founding member) He is a Managing Editor of Case Reports in Nephrology and Urology, a member of editorial boards of Kidney Blood Pressure Research and several Czech medical journals (most important: Editor of the Czech version of Current Opinion in Hypertension and Nephrology). Dr Souhad El Akoum was trained in Biomedical Sciences at the Université de Montréal where he
obtained a PhD degree. His graduate research work on cardiovascular diseases linked to
metabolic alterations was completed at the Montreal Heart Institute. During his studies, he
developed a new type 2 diabetic mice model based on high-fat diets to assess cardiovascular and
metabolic disorders. Further, he showed a direct impact of adipose tissue on vascular smooth
muscle cells dysfunction that could lead to atherosclerosis.
He then joined for his postdoctoral training the pharmacology and physiology department at the
Université de Montréal to work on the adipose tissue inflammation process in type 2 diabetes.
His work focuses on the role of bradykinin type 1 receptor in diabetogenesis and its modulation
in the adipose tissue in an obesity-linked type 2 diabetes mouse model.
On the other hand, he is actively collaborating with the inflammation department of the Montreal
research center of the CHUM focused on the role of CD40/CD40L complex in a mouse model of
collagen induced arthritis. His research focus is on the biological role of CD40 homodimers in a
collagen induced arthritis mouse model

Dr. Suman Dasgupta is an Assistant Professor of Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Tezpur University, Assam, India. He received his Ph.D. in Zoology from Visva-Bharati (A Central University), Santiniketan, West Bengal, India. He completed his Masters degree in Zoology with specialization in molecular endocrinology from the University of Calcutta, India. His Ph.D. research was focused on the molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance along with the determination of possible drug targets. Beside his Ph.D work, he also actively engaged in the research on cancer biology and drug discovery program in the laboratory. After Ph.D, he started his postdoctoral work in the same University as a UGC-Dr. D.S.Kothari PDF and then he moved to a CSIR institute, North-East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat, Assam, India and continued his research on type 2 diabetes and cancer biology. He recognised with several awards and fellowships. Dr. Dasgupta received JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Japan in 2013 and Young Scientist medal award in 2012 from Indian National Science academy (INSA), New Delhi, Govt. of India. He also received CSIR-NEIST QHF from NEIST in 2012; UGC-Dr. D. S. Kothari Postdoctoral Fellowship from UGC in 2011 and CSIR-UGC (NET)-JRF from UGC, New Delhi in 2006 for performing Ph.D. research work in India, UGC-WB-SLET in 2006 and CSIR-UGC (NET)-LS in 2005 for lecturership in India. He has authored several research publications in peer-reviewed international journals with five patent applications in the field of type 2 diabetes and cancer. His current research work is primarily focused on the molecular mechanism of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes; role of innate immunity on metabolic disorders; obesity induced macrophage-adipocyte crosstalk and adipocyte dysfunction; and lung and breast cancer research. His laboratory also affianced with the drug development research in the area of type 2 diabetes and cancer.

Dr. Saisho received his medical degree in 1998 and his PhD degree in 2009, both from the Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo. Before obtaining his current position as assistant professor, Dr. Saisho completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Larry L. Hillblom Islet Research Center at the University of California-Los Angeles�s David Geffen School of Medicine (Prof. Peter C. Butler). Dr. Saisho has served as chief resident in the Department of Internal Medicine in Shizuoka and at Hiratsuka Municipal Hospital in Hiratsuka, Japan and was also a clinical fellow in the Division of Nephrology, Endocrinology and Metabolism at Keio University School of Medicine�s Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Saisho is the author or coauthor of more than 40 publications. He is a member of the Fellows� Association of the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, the Fellows� Association of the Japan Diabetes Society, the Japan Endocrine Society, and the Japan Atherosclerosis Society. Dr. Padmalayam obtained a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Georgia State University (GSU) in Atlanta in 1996. Dr. Padmalayam�s dissertation research, conducted as a collaborative project with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and GSU, focused on investigating the pathogenic mechanisms employed by the Bartonella species and identifying key proteins that are involved in the infection process. She continued her postdoctoral work at the Division of Viral and Ricketssial Diseases at the CDC, conducting further investigations into the pathogenesis of bartonellae and their interactions with host cells during infection. In 2001, Dr. Padmalayam joined Reddy US (RUS) Therapeutics, Inc., a drug discovery company based in Norcross, GA. While at RUS, her research focus shifted to metabolic diseases, and she identified a novel mitochondrial target gene that plays a key role in metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. As a project leader for this program, she directed the project from target identification/validation stages to the lead optimization stage. Dr. Padmalayam joined Southern Research in August 2010 and currently serves in multiple roles, including Program Manager of the Strategic Initiatives Plan (SIP), an internal research funding program, and Head of the Assay Development/Lead Generation Laboratory. Her laboratory provides research support for various drug discovery programs at Southern Research which span a broad range of therapeutic areas such as oncology, infectious, neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases. Dr. Padmalayam has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and holds three patent applications.

Dr. Padmalayam�s research interest is in identifying novel and druggable targets for obesity, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome.

Paolo Antonio S. Silva, MD is Staff Ophthalmologist and Assistant Chief of Telemedicine at the Beetham Eye Institute of the Joslin Diabetes Center. He is an associate surgeon at the Brigham and Women�s Hospital and part of the attending staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, MA. He also holds an academic appointment as an instructor in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. He has been awarded the Young Clinician Award from the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology and Eleanor and Miles Shore 50th Anniversary Fellowship Program for Scholars in Medicine from Harvard Medical School. Dr Silva�s work is focused on ultimately eliminating visual loss from diabetic retinal complications. Dr. Silva has led clinical validation studies on ultrawide field and other novel retinal imaging devices, retinal image analysis and clinical outcome evaluation for diabetic retinal disease. Dr. Silva actively directs the efforts of the Joslin Vision Network, an innovative ocular telehealth program for diabetic retinopathy, with the ultimate goal of delivering the highest quality of diabetes eye care and promoting collaborative research that is free from disparities induced by geographic, political, or cultural boundaries

Biography

After completing his family medicine residency training at Duke, Dr. O'Connor worked in a remote rural clinic on the Navajo Reservation, where some of the 50 patients he saw each day arrived on horseback. The clinic had no electricity or phone, and he needed a translator (who served as a Navajo "Code Talker" in World War II) for nearly all visits. Dr. O'Connor tried to learn a few things from several medicine men who were his patients. There was no phone or electricity at the clinic, and it was a challenge to take care of his 25 patients with diabetes. His first research project was a study of whether his 25 diabetes patients did worse than the 600 diabetes patients at a local hospital clinic. The results showed no difference in quality of care at the two clinics. The paper reporting the findings was his first publication and won an award from the U.S. Public Health Service, presented by then-U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D.

Chronic disease prevention and treatment in adults and children, clinical decision support for providers and patients and electronic medical records.
