Biography

MagdiSadek Mahmoud obtained B. Sc. (Honors) in communication engineering, M. Sc. in electronic engineering and Ph. D. in systems engineering, all from Cairo University in 1968, 1972 and 1974, respectively. He has been a professor of engineering since 1984. He is now a Distinguished Professor at KFUPM, Saudi Arabia. He was on the faculty at different universities worldwide including Egypt (CU, AUC), Kuwait (KU), UAE (UAEU), UK (UMIST), USA (Pitt, Case Western), Singapore (Nanyang) and Australia (Adelaide). He lectured in Venezuela (Caracas), Germany (Hanover), UK ((Kent), USA (UoSA), Canada (Montreal) and China (BIT, Yanshan). He is the principal author of thirty-six (36) books, inclusive book-chapters and the author/co-author of more than 515 peer-reviewed papers.  He is the recipient of two national, one regional and several university prizes for outstanding research in engineering and applied mathematics. He is a fellow of the IEE, a senior member of the IEEE, the CEI (UK), and a registered consultant engineer of information engineering and systems (Egypt). He is currently actively engaged in teaching and research in the development of modern methodologies to distributed control and filtering, networked-control systems, triggering mechanisms in dynamical systems, fault-tolerant systems and information technology. He is a fellow of the IEE, a senior member of the IEEE, the CEI (UK), and a registered consultant engineer of information engineering and systems Egypt.

Biography

After master degree, I got my first job from Institute of Nuclear Energy Research, and worked for the NDT Lab. For three years, my major work was focused on ultrasound system, automation scanner design and NDT technology development. Then I entered IBAG precision Machinery Co., LTD where my major work was focused on the high-speed spindle motor development, CAD&CAE test and reliability analysis for machining center for three years. After then, I passed the recruitment exam of Han-Shiung Aeronautic Industry Development Co. Ltd. And served as a senior engineer at Medical Instrument Center and handled three medical projects and two patents application for two years, then transferred to Maintenance Department to run maintenance test-platform rebuilding for one year. After left Han-Shiung, I went to Department of Engineering, Leicester University and began my PhD study for electrical engineering about motor design and control for three years, finally published 6 SCI papers including two IEEE transaction journal papers. After finishing my PhD, I got a teaching offer from Department of Electrical Engineering, National Chung-Hsing University and was entitled as project-appointed assistant professor for three and half years. During that period, my research interesting is focused on power system, medical system and system control and taught advanced digital control, medical instrumentation and computer aided measurement lectures, here I got four project grants and published 12 SCI papers including two IEEE transaction journal papers. In 2010 beginning, I went to Department of Applied Mechanics, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and was offered an associate professor position, meanwhile I continued to do medical Engineering and intelligent robot research and taught measurement instrument and control lecture, here I published 6 SCI papers about smart system. I came back Taiwan again, and then I went to GIS Center and Department of Aerospace and Systems Engineering, Feng-Chia University and done research and taught for one and half years, during that period, I developed a small ocean thermal energy conversion system for Water Resource Agency, Ministry of Economic Affair, Taiwan project, here I got two project grants and published two EI conference papers about sustainable energy system. From 2012/8 to 2015/7, I was promoted as a professor at Department of Civil Engineering, Shantou University, P.R. China. Now my major interesting is on sustainable energy system, smart system and GIS platform and taught engineering mechanics I, II, III. In future, I continue to make my contribution on smart system application for engineering and science, especially at green sustainable energy, until now I got 3 project grants and published 3 SCI papers. From 2015/8, I was promoted as a chair professor at Faculty of Engineering, National HuaQiao University, P.R. China. Now, I major on smart system, computer vision, intelligent robot and cloud computering platform for internet of thing.

His main area of research is thermal imaging, human physiology, biomedical engg; computational turbomachinery aerodynamics; micro-scale cooling problems; computational fluid dynamics & numerical heat transfer. His latest work on human eye biomechanics and burn injury thermal physics is being used in the space suits for intense thermal loading in planetary missions.

He is an invited keynotes speaker for more than 15 international scientific confs./workshops. He is active in offering consulting services & a fellow of SAF-NTU Academy. 15 of his thermal imaging papers have been adopted as references in Singapore Standard (SS 582: 2013) and ISO/IEC 80601-2-59: 2008. He is also presently serving as panel member for the Biomedical Standards Committee, Singapore.

The affable adjunct NUH scientist has a special interest in infrared (IR) physics & technology and has contributed greatly to research on IR, in particular on application of IR to biomedical sciences. The co-inventor of 3 USA patents on multiple analytical software classifier programs to identify the different stages of breast cancer development using thermal data with Lifeline’s First Warning TM system, he further explores the use of IR in the field of ophthalmology for early detection of health abnormality. Those 3 patents have attracted more than USD10m from USA directly. This First Warning Systems are processed for the CE Mark currently & to be followed by clinical validation with FDA and market entry of the inventions in select European markets. He collaborates with fellow researchers from National Health Group Hospitals, also, Poland and USA so as to consistently achieve breakthrough such as concluding the possibility of using the Biofield Diagnostic System as a better objective assessment tool for complimentary breast cancer detection.

  • Coupled CFD and Depth Integrated Modelling of Marine Structures 
    The focus point of this EDB-DHI-IPP project is to improve on the correlation between the wave and depth-averaged properties obtained from DHI’s MIKE-21 and flow properties that are required as boundary conditions for the Navier-Stokes solver. The emphasis will be on the handling of the transitions between near-field and far-field in a logical manner, transiting from the far to the near-field.
    [CAE Lab, Thermo-Fluid & Energy]Computational Fluid Dynamics Study of C-130 External Aerodynamics Flow Field
    To perform CFD investigative study with MINDEF-USAFA-RSAF for the external aerodynamic flow field in the vicinity of a military cargo airplane (e.g. C130H) during airdrop of supplies and hardware in order to assess aerodynamic interference effects on the trajectories of the airdrop. We apply 6 degree of motion freedom to the extraction parachute/cargo pallet to determine the actual trajectory rather than specifying the motion. 
    [CAE Lab, Thermo-Fluid & Energy]Probability Model for Ignition of Gas Ingested by a Gas Turbine 
    This EDB-IPP-ERIAN project with Lloyd’s Register GTC is to build a probability model for ignition of flammable gas ingested by a gas turbine engine computationally and validated experimentally. It aims to improve the comprehensiveness of the Quantitative Risk Analysis in the Norwegian oil and gas sector and other areas where gas turbine engines operate close to other equipment and gas sources.
    [ERIAN, Thermo-Fluid & Energy]Development of A Coupled Simulation Methodology for Offshore Wind Turbines 
    This EDB-IPP project with Lloyd’s Register GTC is to analyse the various unsteady aerodynamic phenomena by means of higher order methods such as direct rotor modelling, actuator disc modelling and free vortex wake models, and using these analyses to develop an accurate and reliable analytical tool for floating offshore wind turbines aerodynamics using unsteady blade element momentum method (uBEM). 
    [ERIAN, Thermo-Fluid & Energy]Optimal Structural Design of Wind Energy System 
    This EDB-IPP project with DNV-GL & NTNU is to conduct design modeling, dynamic analysis and structural optimization of compliant structure in offshore wind application. We perform parametric study on concept against offshore wind environmental design drivers and design parameters.

    [ERIAN, Thermo-Fluid & Energy]Cancer-detecting Bra 
    Dense breast tissue presents a higher risk of breast cancer developing than breast tissue with low density. This denser tissue is related to higher rates of false positive and false negative results from mammography or ultrasound, leading to unnecessary breast biopsy surgeries or failure to detect abnormal tissue. This project with Cyrcadia Health, Inc. developed an original device that has achieved FDA 510K clearance with 650 patients and the on-going final 173 BI-RADS 4/5 patient trail at JamesCare Comprehensive Breast Center in Ohio State University and The El Camino Hospital in Silicon Valley is positively tested and is being commercialized for product release in 2015.

Ahmed  Elkafoury is researcher in Environmental Eng. Dept., in Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology. Between 2006 and 2012, Elkafoury worked in Public Works Engineering Dept., in Faculty of Engineering – Tanta University, Egypt. During his work in Tanta University, he participated in 3 committees and research reports for planning of transportation and traffic movements in Tanta City. Elkafoury got the Ms.C. in civil engineering (Transportation Planning) in 2012. He is doing his research in the field of Urban Transportation Planning. Elkafoury is a team member of the Transportation Planning group which is a part of cooperation research project between Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) and Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) titled “New Borg-Elarab EcoCity Project : EcoNBC project”. This project tends to turn NBC into an Eco-City”. This is a cooperation research project between Egyptian and Finnish governorate. During his Ph.D researches, he focus on modeling the environmental impact of urban transportation systems. He also attended more than 18 workshops in different environmental planning and management aspects.

Dr. Lei Liu has completed his Ph.D in 2010 from National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, China, after that he went to iNANO Center of Aarhus University, Denmark for postdoctoral studies about 3 years working with Prof. Flemming Besenbacher and Dr, Mingdong Dong. He became the Young Distinguish Professor of JiangSu University China, in 2013. Since 2014, he has been the research and Jiangsu Specially-Appointed Professor of China. His research interest focuses on the scanning probe microscopy, molecular self-assembly of peptides, mechanical property of self-assembled nanostructure and functionality and etc.

Jin Seop Bak was born on January 16, 1980, and has a college degree in Chemistry in Yonsei University and a PhD in Food Biotechnology in Korea University with top honors. He is Senior Researcher/Postdoctoral Researcher in Faculty of Center for Biomimetic Mechanical Systems/Institute of Advanced Machines and Design/Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Seoul National University, where he conducts his research activity. He is also Research Assistant Professor/Committee Member/Subproject Leader in Faculty of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering/Advanced Biomass R&D Center in KAIST. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher in UC Berkeley (conditionally), Korea University, KAIST, KRIBB, IPET, and MIT (conditionally). In Korea University, he played a key role in teaching Physical Chemistry lectures. He is a leading member of a large number of academies and nonprofit organizations (e.g., Mensa). His main area of investigation is Development of novel biological system based on biomimetics approach. He has achieved many research publications with highly citation index, 2 patents, 4 grants and has made a big number of communications in scientific events. He is a reviewer of more than 8 international journals, and member of 4 editorial boards.

Dr. Weifeng Zhao born in 1987 in China, he received his Bachelor Degree in Polymeric Materials & Engineering in Sichuan University (2005-2009), and then continued his Doctoral study in Biomedical Engineering in the same university (2009-2014). During the doctoral study, he was financially supported by Chinese Schlorship Council (CSC) for study in Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden. After completing three years studies in KTH, he got his another doctoral degree in Polymer Technology. Weiqiang Wu received his PhD from Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2010. From 2010 to
2012, he conducted postdoc research work in Notre Dame Radiation Lab, University of Notre Dame sponsored
by Intel Inc. He moved to Department of Chemistry and Center for Catalysis and Surface Science, Northwestern
University in the middle of 2012. At Northwestern University, Dr Wu focused on the spectroscopic studies of
heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis. His research has been recognized by several awards, such as Gary

Xiaohong Wang is the Founder / Director of the Center of Organ Manufacturing in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua University. In 2011, she was awarded through the Finland Distinguished Professor Programme by the Academy of Finland and Tekes. She has published more than 110 articles, more than 90 of which are listed in the Science Citation Index (SCI). She is a member of the biomanufacturing branch of the Mechanical Engineering Society of China, an international member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a member of the editorial board of more than ten international journals, such as Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers, World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology, and Journal of Stem Cells Research, Reviews and Reports. She acts as a peer-reviewer for more than 30 refereed journals and had chaired/co-chaired a series of biomodeling and biomanufacturing-related sessions in many international conferences.

Prof. Yingchao Dong leads research in Engineering and Techniques of environmental inorganic ceramic membrane at Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his Engineering doctorate degree at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2008 and then spent one year as a post-doctor at the same lab. In 2009, Dr. Dong went to the University of Limerick (Ireland) as an IRCSET Research Fellow. Then, he joined Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) as PD researcher (2011-2012) and JSPS fellow (2012). In 2012, he joined Chinese Academy of Sciences as a group leader. Under the supports of some national, provincial and municipal projects, Prof. Dong is currently leading a vigorous research group. His scientific interests are inorganic ceramic membrane and membrane process, pollutants separation and conversion, recycling of inorganic solid-wastes/minerals and water pollution control. Until now, Dr Dong holds ~80 publications, including ~60 SCI papers in refereed international leading journals.

Biography

Gaspare Giovinco was born in Palata (CB), on 24th December 1975. He took his degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio and his PhD in 2003 with a thesis titled “Effective thermal conductivity of packed beds of spheres: numerical and experimental study”. Since 2005 he is assistant professor at University of Cassino and Southern Lazio and since 2000 he collaborates with the Metrological Institute “G. Colonnetti” in Turin in the research field of metrological characterisation of pressure balances. From 1999 to 2006 he collaborated with SNAM SpA, now SNAM Rete Gas SpA, for the experimental determination of natural gas thermodynamical properties and of gaseous pollutant. From 1999 to 2001 he participated to the research programme financed by MURST titled “Effective thermal conductivity of porous media” as member of the research unit of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio. From 2001 to 2003 he participated to the research programme financed by MIUR titled “Solid urban wastes as renewable energy source: environmental impact evaluation of integrated disposal systems by using LCA and environomic theory techniques” as member of the research unit of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio. From 2005 to 2007 he participated to the research programme financed by MIUR titled “Thermal and Fluid dynamic study of façade adaptive components for comfort and energy saving” as member of the research unit of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio. From 2004 to 2008 he is lecturer of Applied Acoustics, from 2005 to 2009 he is lecturer of “Building Thermophysics Fundamentals”, from 2008 to present days he is lecturer of Thermal Plants, from 2009 to present days he is lecturer of Techniques of Environmental Control and from 2009 to present days he is lecturer of Applied Thermodynamics. All the courses were and are held at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio.

Heat transfer in porous media: i) numerical models for the evaluation of the effective thermal conductivity of rough spheroid packed beds and for the evaluation of thermal contact resistance between plane and curved surfaces; ii) design and build up of experimental equipments for the measurement of thermal properties; iii) uncertainty evaluation of numerical models and measurement methods.

Thermophysical properties of building components: i) design and build up of experimental equipments for the measurement of thermal conductance of windows and thermal emissivity of surfaces, with corresponding uncertainty estimation; ii) algorithms for the solution of heat transfer inverse problems applied to building thermophysics.

Thermal and fluid dynamic measurement and control: i) thermal properties of natural gas by means of gas chromatographs and improvements of the calibration techniques; ii) metrological characterization of pressure balances through numerical models.

Geothermal energy: numerical simulation of geothermal plants and reservoirs.

Wind power: statistical analysis and reconstruction of wind speed distributions.

Statistical analysis of experimental data: least squares (ordinary, linear, non-linear and generalized), ANOVA, ANCOVA.

Analysis of medical images by means of equations and algorithms typical of heat transfer.

I’m an assistant professor at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences since June 2015. I have received my PhD in Orthotics and Prosthetics from University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences from 2011-2015. My PhD dissertation title was “Measurement and control system for inside socket temperature of below knee prosthesis: design, manufacture and evaluation”. In this project, a professional team and I, in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, have designed and manufactured a thermoregulatory system to control temperature inside prosthetic socket. I received my MSc and BSc in Orthotics and Prosthetics from Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2008 and 2005, respectively. In my Master thesis entitled “Vibratory lumbar orthosis to improve balance and walking velocity in patients with Parkinson’s disease”, I invented a new vibratory lumbar orthosis as an assistive device to improve balance and walking velocity in patients with Parkinson’s disease by stimulating proprioceptive receptors of the lumbar region. In the published paper of my Master thesis, I used a sensory stimulus in form of vibration to increase the balance and prevent falling in those patients with Parkinson’s disease. Vibration acts as noise to increase erroneous input to central nervous system and causes tonic vibration reflex in lumbar postural muscles.

I have great interest in research and education in rehabilitation and biomedical engineering. This topic can fulfill my interest in the knowledge of structure and function of human biomechanical system.

Dr. Wei-Ren Su is an Associate Professor at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. He received his medical degree from Chung-Shan Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan in 1990. He earned his master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan in 2000. He completed residency in Orthopaedic surgery at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital. He specializes in shoulder and knee surgery, with a focus on the novel surgical techniques for shoulder arthroscopy. His primary research has been focused on the biomechanics of the shoulder joint and the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment of the biceps long head. His current research focus is on the novel surgical treatments for biceps long head tenodesis. He has publications of more than 40 peer reviewed papers and served as reviewer of reputed international Journals. He serves as member of many orthopedic committees and has collaboration with researchers based at renowned universities and centers.

Yu-Jung, Li currently is a lecturer at St. Mary’s Medicine, Nursing and Management College, and responsible for pathology, human anatomy lecture with experiment, experiment of physiology, clinical laboratory and diagnostic tests. He completed his training program of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Veterans General Hospital-Taipei, Taiwan during 2002-2006. He entered the Ph.D. Course in 2010 and currently is a doctoral candidate, majored in mechanical and electrical engineering from National Taipei University of Technology. Earlier he received MS degree of Clinical Dental Science from Institute of Clinical Dentistry, National Yang-Ming University. He also received MS degrees of Chemistry and Biophysics from Graduate Institute of Biophysics, National Central University, and Institute of Chemistry, Tamkang University during 2006-2010. He got bachelor degree of dentistry from Department of Dentistry, Chung Shan Medical University in 2002.

              His current research is mainly about long-term drug delivery device and biosensor based on dental implant structure. He also focuses on medical care of chronic and critical diseases, especially in oral cancer, and established a theoretical model of embryogenesis and carcinogenesis as the master thesis in 2009.

Since 2001 I have been water Resources and Hydraulic structures Expert in east azarbaijan Regional water Corp in Iran. Also I have had work experience in lining of tunnels in 2000 in "Karun 3" dam. 

 Surveying turbulence effects and bed load formulas in dam break sedimentary processes are my interests. Extending 2D Numerical conditions to 3D for Modeling of dam break flow, Research for efficiency of various bed load formulas for dam break flow, Research about other Riemann solvers in addition of HLLC Riemann solver and Complimenting of Laboratory tests for comparing Laboratory Results with the Results of Numerical Modeling in various test conditions, Extending studies to other subjects related to shock waves in flows and other follow conditions will be my probable future activities.

Biography

Taha H. S. Abdelaziz received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt, and his Ph.D. degree in Automatic Control from Czech Technical University, Czech Republic. He is working as associate professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Northern Border University, KSA. Prior to Northern Border University, He was assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt in 2010. His main research interests include linear systems, pole assignment, eigenstructure assignment, and robust control. He is the author of more than 20 scientific papers in Refereed Journals and International Conferences.

Biography

Xiangyang Zhou was born in 1971. He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, China, in 1992 and the M.S. degree in mechanical engineering and the Ph. D. degree in instrumentation science and technology from Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China, in 2003 and 2008, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor with the School of Instrumentation Science and Opto-electronics Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, China. He was a visiting scholar for one year during 2014-2015 at Department of Mechanical Engineering, Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720, USA. His main research interests include the mechatronics, design and control technology of precision electromechanical system, MEMS and Micro and Nano Technology.
