Biography

I am a Surgical Oncologist specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant and benign injuries of liver, pancreas and colorectal liver metastases. I am graduated in Medicine at University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and I have done a Clinical Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at AC Camargo Cancer Center (São Paulo – SP – Brazil). I was approved for Board Certification for both Brazilian Societies of General Surgery and Oncology. I spent two years (2010 – 2012) as Research Fellow at Hepatopancreatobiliary Service of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York (USA). During this time, I worked on clinical research of surgical and systemic treatment of pancreatic cancer and colorectal liver metastases. Afterwards, I also spent one year as a resident of Hepatopancreatobiliary Service at Hospital Paul Brousse, France (2012/2013), taking care of patients with liver and pancreas diseases, including colorectal liver metastases; liver and pancreas primary cancers; and patients in need of liver transplantation. I have a PhD in Gastroeneterology by the University of São Paulo, the same institution where I am an attending of the Liver Surgery Unit. Actually, I have been studying the effects of chemotherapy in patients with colorectal liver metastases looking for patient selection and long-term outcomes who underwent curative-intent surgeries. I have been working as clinical researcher focused more in liver and pancreas cancer, treatments and long-term outcomes.

Research Interests

Interested studying the pathophysiology and management of renal ischemia/reperfusion injury, a common clinical problem in kidney transplantation, through animal models. He investigated new lines of treatment such as EGF, erythropoietin, antioxidants, ischemic preconditioning and post-conditioning. He investigated a new adaptive mechanisms involved in renoprotective action of ischemic preconditioning such as nrf2 factor. Also, he expanded his research focus area to include type 2 DM. He investigated role of insulin resistance in pathophysiology of metabolic and myocardial dysfunctions present in type 2 DM.

Laurent DolléPhD

Assistant Professor
Department of Biomedical Sciences
Free University Brussels
Address:Belgium
Biography

? 1999-2003: PhD-Thesis entitled “Autocrine stimulation of the growth of breast cancer cells by the Nerve Growth Factor” passed with great distinction, University of Sciences and Technologies of Lille, France. My work was on the production and biological impact of the neurotrophic factor NGF (Nerve Growth Factor) in breast cancer. Using a wide range of technological approaches (proteomics, metabolomics…) I have significantly contributed to the progression of knowledge and evolution of concepts in this field. This resulted in a patent for detecting NGF in patient suffering of breast cancer in order to use NGF as a prognostic factor. Currently, I am staying in close contact with my mentor, Prf. H. Hondermarck to develop a quick research project around the implication of NGF secretion and presence of nerve fibers during liver regeneration.

? 2003-2007: First Post-Doctoral position: at the University of Ghent (Laboratory of Cancerology, Prof. Dr. M. Bracke and Prof. Dr. M. Mareel). My objectives were to describe better and understand better the mechanisms of invasion of the breast cancer cells by proteomic analysis on the E-cadherin/catenin complex and its soluble fragment. Interestingly, we discovered that NGF is involved in invasion of breast cancer cells by playing on the status of a soluble E-cadherin fragment. I developed a strong basic knowledge on the processes of invasion, migration and metastasis, and I have used a panel of in vitro and in vivo cancer models.

? 2007-present: Second Post-Doctoral position: at the Free University of Brussels (VUB), Belgium (Dept. of Cell Biology, Prof. Dr. A. Geerts and Laboratory of liver cell biology, Prof. Leo van Grunsven (from January 2009). The main objective of the project was to study the hepatic progenitor cell niche under experimental conditions and in human liver disease. My personal main objective was to identify techniques to isolate the liver progenitor cells, expand them in vitro and push their differentiation towards hepatocyte-like cells. I learned to be a team player able to organize and coordinate multidisciplinary projects. I developed an international network (Australia, US, UK, Nederland’s, Germany…) to stimulate and inspire my own research to the kind of high quality publications in high level journals. I discovered the world of liver progenitor cells, which inspired me a lot for aiming at groundbreaking discoveries.

? In 2012: I became Assistant Professor at the VUB (10% BOF-ZAP), at the Liver Cell Biology Laboratory, Department Biomedical Sciences. Title of my research: “Liver regeneration and transplantation: role of liver progenitor cells, their niche and their secretome”; European Project: IAP-HEPRO P7/47 (BELSPO). My main objective was to further develop the prior discovery on the importance of aldehyde dehydrogenase activity in liver progenitor cells. My main interest of the last year as a senior post-doc is the exploration of cross-talks between the liver, the gut and other tissues (e.g., pituitary gland and pancreas). The gut microbiota seems to play an important role in the activation of the liver stem cells. We are now trying to identify the existing crosstalks between pituitary gland, pancreas and liver, who all receive signals from each other but also from the gut microbiota. Identification of the molecules responsible for these changes is my last objective before ending up the project. As a starting block, we sharpen our look at the betatrophin. Interestingly, we found growth hormone (GH) as a new molecular signal that can regulate the liver progenitor cells activation.

Altogether, my successive post-doc positions have enriched myself, and nourished my creativity. I developed skills to create collaborations, not exclusively international, but also in Belgium by enlarging my network to the main high standing universities. I managed to develop my network to get noticed, get known and be recognized by my pairs. Finally, my thoughts radically stick to the two mottos cited in my CV.

Research Interests

The exploration of cross-talks between the liver, the gut and other tissues (e.g., pituitary gland and pancreas) in order to explain/support the liver progenitor cells activation. Identifying the existing crosstalks between pituitary gland, pancreas and liver, who all receive signals from each other but also from the gut microbiota.
