Shengzhou WuPhD

Wenzhou Medical University
Address:China
Biography

Shengzhou graduated from Shanghai Medical University with Bachelor of Medicine in 1996 and earned Ph.D degree in Neuroscience program from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock, AR, USA in 2004.  And then, I did a postdoctoral training in Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis and continued a one-year clinical training afterwards.  Since 2010, I established my own research team in School of Optometry and Ophthalmology in Wenzhou Medical University.  Basically, I devoted my major research effort to understanding the roles of the neuroinflammation or proteasome inhibition and its- associated calcium dyshomeostasis, endoplasmic reticulum stress.  Recently, we found that D-serine, atypical neurotransmitter, may underlie the degeneration of Retinal Ganglion Cell in Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) as well as in neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease.  Very recently, we found out that proteasome inhibition reduces the component of ER quality-control system, calreticulin/calnexin system, and impacts channel regulating calcium homeostasis.  Altogether, all my research effort is to understand the neurodegenerative mechanism.  I have published 12 peer-review paper as the first or corresponding author in reputed journals and reviewed manuscripts for several journals and serve as an Expert Board Member in International Journal of Ophthalmology.

Hongjun Liu

Assistant Professor
Department of Ophthalmology
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
Address:Unites States of America
Biography

Dr. Liu is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His research focuses onunderstanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate retinal cell turnover and regeneration in adult mammals. Current common knowledge indicates that the retina of adult mammals lacks regenerative capacity. This lack of regeneration contributes to irreversible neuronal loss and the pathogenesis of a host of retinal degenerative diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Using a genetic lineage tracing approach, we recently demonstrated that Lgr5, a G-protein coupled receptor family protein that has been characterized as a marker for adult stem cells in high turnover tissues and organs, is expressed in a small group of retinal cells in adult mice. Although these Lgr5+ retinal cells exhibit characteristics of differentiated amacrine interneurons, they can, proliferate, and generate other retinal lineages under normal physiological conditions and/or in response to injury. These findings suggest that the retina of adult mammals is not devoid of regeneration as previously thought, and it is rather plastic. Lgr5+amacrine cells function as adult retinal stem cells, contributing to retinal homeostatic maintenance. The identification of Lgr5+amacrine cells as the endogenous regenerative source and the demonstration that the mammalian retina is continuously renewed across lifetime provide us new insights into the pathogenesis of many degenerative retinal diseases. Our long-term goals are to apply this knowledge to develop novel therapies for these debilitating retinal disorders.
