Address:Greece
Biography

Vasiliki E. Kalodimou is Director of the Flow Cytometry-Research and Regenerative Medicine Department at IASO Maternity-Pediatric and Research Hospital in Athens, Greece. Before her current appointment, Kalodimou served as a haematology associate at General University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, and as an instructor at both the General University Hospital of Heraklion and the Ipokratios Medical-Technical Institute of Athens.

Kalodimou received her bachelor’s degree in Human Physiology and her master’s degree in Human Molecular Genetics from the Imperial College at the University of Medicine in London, UK. She completed her PhD at the University of Medicine in Athens, Greece, with an emphasis on stem cells and factors affecting their viability and absolute numbers. Since 2006, Dr. Kalodimou has studied and working with stem cells from placenta, umbilical cord and adipose tissue, in every day practice and their applications in regenerative medicine and Flow Cytometry.

In collaboration with the Hellenic Flow Cytometry Society, Kalodimou has developed quality control schemes for stem cell marker enumeration. The goal of this work is to find helpful new applications for flow cytometry, evaluate the risk factors for stem cell infusion, and improve the clarity and accessibility of measurements by flow cytometry. Her work quantifies and ranks all risks of flow cytometry enumeration to prevent and minimize the false-positive results from different cytometer uses. She is also working to establish combinations of monoclonal antibodies for mesenchymal and adipose tissue stem cell enumeration.

In addition to collaboration with state universities and pharmaceutical companies on research projects, Kalodimou frequently publishes her findings. The Greek edition of this book was published in 2010 and has been well-received while the USA edition was published in 2014 by AABB-RESS USA. She is a member of two subsections of the AABB Cellular Therapies Section, an Associate Leader at AABB CT Subsection: CT Product Manufacturing and Testing, an AABB assessor and her biography has been included in the ‘Who is Who in the World’ (Marquis) – 2014 & 2015.

I was involved in clinical practice in Montevideo until December of 2008, when my interest in research drove me to the Mayo Clinic to work as a Research Trainee, Research Fellow, and Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension.

Over the past years, I have published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers and more than 60 abstracts in prestigious scientific journals in the field of renal and cardiovascular diseases, 3 book chapters, and served as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals with a worldwide circulation, such as Hypertension and Circulation. I have also presented multiple oral and poster presentations at recognized scientific meetings such as the American Society of Nephrology Renal Week, which is the world’s premier nephrology meeting.

I have received several awards including a 2-years postdoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association (2010-2012), the “Outstanding Research Fellow Award 2012” from the Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic, a Training & Career Development Award from the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Mayo Clinic, a “Top Oral Abstract by Trainees for the ASN Kidney Week 2012”, the “Top Scoring abstract in all 16 American Heart Association’s Specialty Conferences 2012”.

Research Interests

My research interests have focused on understanding the pathogenesis of renal and cardiac injury due to atherosclerotic renovascular disease (ARVD), and the development of novel treatment strategies to improve blood pressure and renal outcomes after revascularization in swine ARVD. These studies include the application of state-of-the-art imaging techniques (multi-detector computer tomography, micro-computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, etc.) in animal models and in humans. In addition, I have been involved in several projects aimed to elucidate the deleterious effects of inflammation in the ARVD kidney, and the development of treatment options (stem cells, progenitor cells, anti-apoptotic drugs, etc.) to attenuate microvascular rarefaction and loss beyond the stenotic lesion.

Biography

My career started by earning M.Sc. in Medicinal Chemistry followed by Ph.D. in Pharmacology, after graduating from the School of Pharmacy of the University of Patras, Greece. Its major turning point was in 2004, when I joined the lab of Dr. Walter Koch, a former postdoctoral fellow of Nobel Laureate Robert Lefkowitz`s lab at Duke University. During my 5-year postdoctoral tenure there, I had several successes, awards and honors, most prominent among which being a lead-author publication in “Nature Medicine” and a 4-year Scientist Development Grant award by the American Heart Association (AHA) I currently hold. In addition, I have been a post-doctoral research fellow of the AHA for a total of three years in the past, and, in fact, my postdoctoral fellowship application with AHA in 2007 got an unusual 1-year extension based on its exceptionally high score. I have also been a finalist for the AHA-sponsored Melvin L. Marcus Young Investigator Award in Basic Cardiovascular Sciences, and for the Cardiovascular Research Award of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), I hold two (provisional) research patents, and I currently serve on the Editorial Boards of two peer-reviewed journals, as a regular peer-reviewer for several prestigious journals, including “British Journal of Pharmacology”, "Circulation Research", and “American Journal of Cardiology”, and as a research grant reviewer for AHA. In addition, I am an elected Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA) and its Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences (BCVS). Finally, I have published in various prestigious scientific journals, in addition to “Nature Medicine”, such as: Circulation, JACC, PNAS, JBC, Molecular Pharmacology, etc. (for an extensive list of my >25 peer-reviewed publications, see attached CV and below) and my papers are highly cited.
