Biography

I did my four year BSc (Hons.) in Biotechnology (2007) at the Center of Biotechnology, University of Peshawar and my Ph.D in Biochemistry (2008) from Quaid-I-Azam University Islamabad/University of Missouri, Columbia, USA. During PhD, my research project was dealing in Isolation and Purification of natural compounds/secondary metabolites from plants and microbes. At the same time I was also involved in screening of the natural products against different illnesses including cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases and microbes. After my doctorate degree I joined Department of Biotechnology, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan as Assistant Professor (IPFP) in late 2012 and later on joined the same Department as Assistant Professor (TTS) in January 2013.   

Research Interests

Currently my research interests are dealing with screening of natural product for different biological activities like anti-cancerous, antitumor, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-leishmanial and ati-oxidant activity. I am working on Pakistani medicinal plants. Some of the selected plants are showing promising pharmacological activities against cancer, microbes and diabetes while other are showing good anti-inflammatory activities comparable to known COX 2 inhibitors.  Further I am also working on Plan to plant negative interactions know as Allelopathy.

He was formerly department Head of Plant Virus and Phytoplasma Research, Plant Pathology Research Institute at Agricultural Research Center, Giza, Egypt for 3 years (2003-2006), and Head of Molecular laboratory at Plant Virus and Phytoplasma Res. from Sep. 2005 up to now. In 2007 he has been awarded committee membership of Egyptian Society of Advanced Material and Nano Technology. He is being a committee-member of Egyptian Society of Virology (ESV) since initiation in 2001 up to now. He is the General Secretary for ESV since 2014 for 3-year period. Prof. Sharma’s earlier services include as an Assistant Professor at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural sciences and Technology-J&K, Kashmir and as Associate Professor at Dr. RML Avadh University Faizabad. He has completed his higher educations such as B.Sc (Honours)-1980; M.Sc. (Biochemistry)-1982 and Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1988) from BHU-Varanasi. He qualified GATE in 1983 and CSIR(JRF-NET) in 1984 and then joined  Central Drug Research Institute-Lucknow for completing his doctoral research. He has received number of Awards/ Honors and successfully completed numerous important Academic/ Administrative Assignments. He has twenty six years of teaching / research experience. He has carried out several research projects and published over 130 research papers including book chapters, molecular methods in peer reviewed International and National Journals/ Books/Methods of repute with high impact factors. Ibeh Barth obtained his  MSc degree in Biochemical Pharmacology and toxicology and Ph.D in immunochemistry in 2004. He was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s   faculty best Ph.D   candidate   and has obtained several grants. He has taught in several Universities in Nigeria and   had developed many unique academic programs that relied on the impact of emerging technologies and techniques such bioinformatics and   computational biochemistry. Dr Ibeh has researched widely on plant metabolites especially those with immunostimulatory effect and redox activity.  Before joining the National Biotechnology Development Agency  he was an external examiner to Caritas University, Enugu, Nigeria and has supervised a number of students. He is a Member of Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is a board member of Emerging health and environment Initiative (EMHEI) an NGO   based in Nigeria.His professional career   also   extends to translational science and human empowerment where he has consulted widely for major global organisations (UNDP,DFID etc) on a number of  funded  regional projects through competitive grant awards.

Armando Zarrelli obtained his degree in Organic Chemistry in November 1994 at the University of Naples. Then, he was appointed as Lecturer (1994-97) and as Assistant Professor (1997-2004) at the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece. Research topics of Pr. Hussein Kanaan are in the field of extraction and isolation of bioactive molecules from marine algae and medicinal plants growing on the Lebanese coastline and forests. The focus is on the study of substances of interest in medicine, pharmaceuticals and food processing areas. 

The research is organized around two main themes: the natural substances of marine plants (seaweeds) and knowledge stands of marine plants (biodiversity, dispersal mechanisms, taxonomy and molecular phylogeny). This research is conducted in parallel with the laboratory and field.The Molecules, isolated from marine algae are fucoidan, Laminaran, Mannulorane and Alginates (Brown algae), while Carraghinane, Galactan sulfated and Agar-Agar were extracted from Red Algae. Seasonal variation of the studies was done on the composition, structural, features, and antitumor properties. Also Anticoagulants, Antioxidants, and Antibacteriennent, properties of polysaccharides from   Seaweed growing on the Lebanese coast wereconducted. Identification of marine algae that grow on the Lebanese coast and settling in a Guide.Some of the compounds studied have a growing interest in biotechnology applications in food processing, cosmetology and pharmacology. A better understanding of their biosynthesis should lead to better control of their production.The measurement and analysis of biological parameters extraction techniques (extraction pilot, spectrophotometry, HPLC, GC, NMR, electrophoresis) are applied on samples of algae freshly harvested on the coast Lebanese.

In subsequent years, she visited University of Kiel, Germany in 2007 and 2009 and University of Alcala, Spain in 2011 for short visits for collaborative research. In addition to publication of original research papers, Prof. Biswal has written several invited reviews and book chapters and co-authored a research monograph entitled “Chloroplast biogenesis: From proplastid to gerontoplast” (Springer). Recently she has edited a book entitled " Plastid development in leaves during growth and senescence"(Spinger) with other co-editors namely Prof.Karin Krupinska and Udaya C.Biswal. She has mentored several Ph.D. and M. Phil students at Sambalpur University,Odisha.   She served/serving as a member of the editorial boards of several National and International journals. Currently, Prof. Biswal is one of the consulting editors of the advances in Photosynthesis and Respiration Series, Springer. She received the prestigious Samant Chandrasekhar Award of Government of Odisha in 1997 and is now a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Refrigeration and Cryogenics Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China in 2005 and worked as a Research Fellow at Auburn University, USA from 2006 to 2008. Dr. Yang obtained another Ph.D. in Food Science from the University of Minnesota, USA in 2012. And he was a faculty research assistant at the University of Maryland, USA before joining NUS. Dr Živko Jovanovi? is a research associate at Laboratory for Plant Molecular Biology at the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, University of Belgrade, Serbia. He received his BSc and MSc at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade.  After MSc he obtained permanent position as research assistant at Laboratory for Plant Molecular Biology. Dr Jovanovi? was at ITQB- Lisbon, Portugal as visitor researcher. PhD thesis was defended in 2013 and he obtained position as a researh assoaciate. Dr Jovanovi? was a work package leader in one SEE ERA NET Plus project. At the moment he is a researcher at national funded project, as well as at one SCOPES project, financed by Swiss National Science Foundation. Dr Jovanovi? was reviewer for many plant journals. Dr Matsushima is Professor Emeritus of Sapporo Medical University. He received his PhD in polymer physics at the Hokkaido University in 1976 and joined the Department of Engineering Science, Hokkaido Institute of Technology in 1980-1983, After that, he joined the Sapporo Medical University from 1983, where he directed his research to the structure of bone and proteins including calmodulin and plant proteins such as ?-zein and glutenin. The years 1986-1988 he was the visiting associate professor in the University of Virginia, USA, as where he directed his research to tandem repeats in proteins. He studied the structure of proteins or various tandem repeats in solutions by nuclear magnetic resonance and small-angle x-ray scattering. Moreover, he studied the structure and evolution of tandem repeats including leucine-rich repeats by bioinformatics approach and also developed a total least squares method (HELFIT) for helix fitting.

Elena Glinka graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1981. She received her Ph.D degree in Biochemistry at the A. N. Bach Institute of Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1993. During the years 1981 -2001, she worked in the Laboratory of Biochemistry of Plant Immunity at the A. N. Bach Institute of Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1981 – 2001). Since 1996 she worked as a senior scientist in the Laboratory of Biochemistry of Plant Immunity. Her investigations were focused on study of plant/pathogen interactions, pectolytic enzymes, polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins. Elena Glinka was a senior scientist in the laboratory of Molecular Immunology and then in laboratory of the Structural Biochemistry at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2002-2014). She worked on constructing the eukaryotic expression vectors containing genes encoding anticancer proteins and vectors for expression of antifungal mini-antibodies in potato plants.

He has been involved in identifying the role of Type 3Secretion System secreted proteins involved in suppression of cell wall damage induced rice innate immune responses.These proteins appear to function in suppression of host innate immunity, presumably by modulating the defense signaling pathway. His doctoral work was on genomics aspects of monoterpene essential oil biosynthesis in Mentha X piperita andworked on functional genomics aspects of monoterpene biosynthesis pathway in Mentha species.

Dr. Naser A. Anjum, MSc and PhD in Botany (Plant Stress Physiology), is a post-doctoral researcher at CESAM-Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies & Department of Chemistry, University of Aveiro, Portugal. Earlier, Dr. Anjum availed Academia Sinica (Taiwan), and UGC and CSIR (India) awarded PD-research grant awards (2007-2009), and was selected as UGC-DS Kothari-Fellow (2009) by UGC-MHRD, Govt. of India.
Dr. Anjum’s research works have deciphered cellular redox managers such as ascorbate (AsA), glutathione (GSH) and their redox-couples (AsA/DHA, GSH/GSSG), and associated enzymes in AsA-GSH pathway as the major targets of abiotic stresses (metals/metalloids; nanoparticles, nanoparticles; drought/salinity). Dr. Anjum's research evidenced that maintaining a proper mineral-nutrient or hormonal-status of plants can modulate the cellular status of redox compounds (AsA, GSH) that in turn can improve plant resistance to varied environmental stress-factors. His research also revealed two types of sulfate-transporter systems and their role in sulfur-efficiency in Indian mustard and studied industrial effluents-accrued cytotoxicity in plants. Dr. Anjum has been the pioneer worker to unveil: nano-graphene mediated oxidative stress, antioxidant metabolism and GSH-redox system significance in food crop model, and vital biochemical/physiological and chemical strategies adopted by plant species for their sustenance under environmental metal/pollutants exposure.

Dr Vijai K Agnihotri received his Ph.D. from CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu, India/Kanpur University. During Ph.D. he screened saffron, Achillea millefolium, Bunium persicum, Mentha pulegium, Angelica glauca for their chemical and biological profiling. After Ph.D. he moved to National Center for Natural Products Research, University of Mississippi, USA for postdoctoral studies. During PDF he had isolated a number of novel molecules and assessed their biological activities. During PDF, screening of Nymphaea caerulea flowers, a marijuana substitute was found having a very good antioxidant activity and can be used for the treatment of oxidative stress related diseases. He then moved back to India and joined CCRAS (AYUSH) as a consultant. At CCRAS he contributed in TLC atlas of API Part-I Vol-I and API Part-I Vol-V. At present he is working as scientist at CSIR- Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, India. He is a member of several national and international societies and reviewer of several international journals. His interest in chemical, toxicological and pharmacological research resulted in several high impact publications, patents and a book.

Dr. Shailasree Sekhar received her PhD in Biochemistry as a fellow funded by CSIR, Govt. of India, in 2000. As Post Doctoral Fellow in DANIDA-ENRECA project on Systemic Acquired Resistance and worked on plant-pathogen interaction elucidating the role of beta-amino butyric acid as inducer of resistance in pearl millet; modification of cell wall glycoproteins involved in resistance mechanism, mainly the hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins.  Working independently as Principal Investigator of DST - SERC Fast Track Young Scientist program she aimed at the structural analysis of resistance genes in the area of host defense signal transduction pathway. Currently, under the Institution of Excellence with the thrust area identified as the biodiversity of Western Ghats medicinal plants, with immunological affections and cancer prevention properties, due to location advantage of this hot spot to the University. With an active involvement in compilation of their scientific data as reviews resulted in bringing out a database on pharmacological properties of these medicinal plants of Western Ghats in an efficient way. Screening of medicinal plants with immunological affections used by tribes has resulted in identification of several of them with inflammation/cancer inhibiting property. Fingerprinting their metabolites and providing scientific valuation for traditional application has been her priority. She has published more than 25 papers in peer-reviewed journals, has 2 patents and is an adhoc reviewer of various journals. She has to her credit grants from National scientific agencies under Government of India.

Director, State Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and Plant Resources in West China (Partner Laboratory in The Chinese University of Hong Kong).Professor Leung’s research areas including Orthopaedics, Osteoporosis, Microsurgery Health, Traditional Chinese Medicine and General Education. He is also the author of over 600 scientific manuscripts in journals and 27 books. Examples of publication related in Chinese medicine include: “A Comprehensive Guide to Chinese Medicine”, ”Book in preparation: A Scientist View on Traditional Chinese Medicine”, “Limb Salvage for Diabetic Ulceration with Traditional Chinese techniques”, “Treatment of Low Back Pain with Acupuncture” etc. In addition, Professor Leung has also been appointed as editor of 11 International Journals since 1982.

I am working in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University Putra Malaysia, Malaysia.I have been working for nearly fourty years as an academician that is involve in lectures, researches and also supervision of undergraduates and post-graduates.My research interests include, antioxidants, anti-cancers and anti-diabetics from herbs, fruits, vegetables and plants. Dr. Syed Rashel Kabir is an associate professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Rajshahi University, Bangladesh. He received B.Sc (Honors) and M.Sc degree with the best student awards from the said department. He had completed his Ph.D degree in 2004 and postdoctoral research training from the Tohoku University, Japan under Monbusho and JSPS fellowship, respectively where he also served as staff member. He has been working as a faculty member at the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Rajshahi University since 2005. He obtained University Grants Commission of Bangladesh award (2011) in the field of Clinical, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Sciences section. He is members of many professional organizations and presented his research works in many conferences. Currently Ph.D, M.Phil and M.Sc level students are involved in research works under his direct supervision

I got my MSc in Biological Sciences in 1997, Univ. of Parma, and a PhD cum laude in Applied Genetics in 2001, Univ. of Milan. I dealt with different disciplines, from anthropology, to molecular biology and plant physiology, which convinced me about a less anthropocentric view of life and relationships. Today I am Plant Physiology Researcher at the Dept. of Life Science of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. I am also member of the Interdepartmental Centre Biogest-Siteia for Agri-food Biological Resources Improvement and Valorisation (which belongs to the High Technology Network of Emilia-Romagna Region), and of the Scientific Committee of the PhD Course in Food and Agricultural Science, Technology and Bio-Technology of the same University.

I started my career by conducting phytochemical studies of several local medicinal plants, when I obtained my masters degree in natural product chemistry. Throughout the years, I developed a keen interest in investigating the pharmacological action of the extracts as well as isolated compounds from the studied plants. After obtaining my doctorate in pharmacology, I started to perform thorough studies on several local plants from scratches. For the past ten years, I have conducted exploratory studies on a few medicinal plants of interest. Amongst the investigative pharmacological effects tested include anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperalgesic, anti-angiogenic and angioprevention, chemoprevention and anti-ulcer and most of studies performed are in vivo studies. I have also elucidate the plants mechanism by conducting molecular as well in vitro studies. I have also presented my findings at numerous national and international meetings. I have also published my research findingsin  numerous scientific journals and have also taken part as manuscript reviewer for several impact factor’s journals.

Plants that may possess anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperalgesic activities

I did my BSc in Agricultural Enginer (1986) at the Instituto Tecnológico Agropecuario of Cuauhtemoc City, Mexico. MSc in Agricultural Parasitology at the “Antonio Narro” University, Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico (1994). Doctorate in Food Technology at the Centro de Investigacion en Alimentacion y Desarrollo A.C. (Food and Development Research Center C.A.) Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico (2011). During PhD, my researches were dealing in biochemical, physiological and molecular characterization of novel Trichoderma asperellum strains from cold and warm environments. At this time I was screening of the strains against different plant pathogens fungus: Phymatotrichopsis omnivora, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium spp. and Phytophthora capsici. Some of this works was doing in the Laboratory of Biological Control of Professor Matteo Lorito of Naples University Federico II, Naples, Italy. After my doctorate degree I joined as researcher in plant disease biocontrol at Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Laboratory in the Natural Resources Research Center.

Dana Mohammed Barznji completed his BSc in Sulaimani University in Kurdistan-Iraq. He became assistant lecturer and postgraduate laboratory supervisor in the same university for about 3 years. During that, he had taken several training courses and participates in several laboratory works. He got his MSc in assessment of drinking water quality in 2008 at Sulaimani University. He was appointed as Lecturer and researcher (2008-2011) at the university of Sulaimani-Faculty of Agriculture and many universities in Sulaimani and developed several programs. In 2011, He was awarded the Human Development Capacity Program Scholarship to do his PhD in the United Kingdom. He has received his PhD in Plymouth University-UK in Plant toxicology. During his stay in the UK, he was assistant lecturer at Plymouth University. He also has awarded Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (CELTA) Cambridge ESOL Level 5*, Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language Course (TEFL).
